LUCIA CALAMARO

PLAYWRIGHT, DIRECTOR AND ACTRESS

Lucia Calamaro was born in Rome, moved to Montevideo and graduated in Art and Aesthetics from the Sorbonne in Paris. She taught at the Universidad Catolica de Montevideo, and in Rome collaborated with Rialto Sant’Ambrogio. She founded the association Malebolge and has staged her texts: Medea – tracce di EuripideWoyzeckGuerraCattivi maestriTumore – uno spettacolo desolato e Magick, autobiografia della vergognaL’origine del mondo – ritratto di un interno (at FIT in 2015) won three times the prestigious Premio Ubu award including for best new Italian text and the Premio Enriquez for Direction and Dramaturgy.

Editoria e Spettacolo published Il ritorno della Madre, edited by Renato Palazzi, which collects Tumore – uno spettacolo desolato, Magick – autobiografia della vergogna and L’Origine del mondo – ritratto di un interno. La vita ferma: sguardi sul dolore del ricordo (at FIT in 2016) and Si nota all’imbrunire (Solitudine da paese spopolato) were finalists at the 2017 and 2019 Premi Ubu. In 2019 she won the Premio Hystrio award for Dramaturgy. Her latest creation is the play Darwin inconsolabile – Un pezzo per anime in pena, produced by Sardegna Teatro.

Since 2019 she has been teaching at the CSC – Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. The texts La vita ferma and Origine del mondo are published in France by Actes Sud and in Italy by Einaudi. Since 2021 she has been president of Premio Riccione Teatro, a historic Italian award for playwriting.
