FRANCESCA GAROLLA

AUTHOR, DRAMATURG, DIRECTOR

«Theatre is not bound to analyse, to provide numbers, chronologies or statistics. Theatre, for me, translates, it does not enumerate or explain. And I am not talking about literal translation, I am talking about metaphor, vision, point of view. Writing for the theatre is for me like looking at the horizon through a peephole in a doorway. I cannot see everything, I do not have to see everything, but from what I glimpse I can imagine infinite possible worlds. And it is precisely in that multiplication of possibilities, and in the tight, silent dialogue with the spectator, that I find revolutions of meaning. And landscapes I have never seen».

After studying Philosophy at the University of Milan, Francesca Garolla graduated in Directing at the School of Dramatic Arts Paolo Grassi in Milan. Among her texts, Non correre Amleto, which entered the Palmarès of the Maison Antoine Vitez in 2018 and by La Comédie Française in 2019, Tu es libre [Tu sei libera, at FIT in 2016] translated for the Maison Antoine Vitez, is realised at La Chartreuse – Centre National des écritures du spectacle in Avignon and presented within the Rencontres d’été during the Festival d’Avignon 2017, singled out by la Comédie Française as one of the most significant texts of the 2017/18 season and a finalist in the 2017 Premio Riccione, it was staged at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan in the autumn of 2020.

In 2020/21 she was the only European lauréat of the playwriting section of the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, where she wrote Se ci fosse luce, the third part of a trilogy on freedom, inspired by the events of the Aldo Moro kidnapping. In 2022, she received the award Premio Valeria Moriconi – Futuro della scena, at the recommendation of Emma Dante.

For eighteen years she has been part of the artistic direction of Teatro i (Milan), together with Renzo Martinelli and Federica Fracassi.
She is currently a selected author in the European project Fabulamundi – Playwriting Europe.
