Julian Hetzel, interviewed by Wendy Lubberding | Parool

«I wanted to make tangible the dead end of polarisation in politics, – says playwright Julian Hetzel (44) the day after the premiere – and this set is exactly the right vehicle. Because it’s easy to turn away from people who vote for parties diametrically opposed to your views if you don’t know them. But this man and woman share the same universe and raise three children within it. They had to keep talking to each other. I was curious to see where that would lead»

Trigger Warning: Three Times Left is Right is an urgent and darkly humorous piece about polarization. A family portrait that magnifies the fractures of society. An invitation for the audience to explore ideological conflicts in which violence is normalised. The performance is inspired by the true story of a Viennese couple: she is a pioneering thinker in the identity movement, he is a cultural scientist with a communist past. How can we share a home with those whose beliefs are completely opposed to our own? Torn between conflicting beliefs, they embody the challenge of living together under irreconcilable ideologies.

Julian Hetzel explores the tension between love and hate and how the private becomes political. Three Times Left is Right turns theatre into a space for speculation to stage an unsettling future scenario.
