SCIMONE SFRAMELI

THEATRE COMPANY

Compagnia Scimone Sframeli was founded in 1994 as a result of the artistic collaboration between Spiro Scimone and Francesco Sframeli, actors, directors and playwrights from Messina, Sicily.

That same year, the two actors, driven by the need to search for new languages, staged the first work Nunzio (at FIT in 2015) written by Scimone, in the Messina dialect. The work received important recognition and proved to be a milestone in their artistic journey, thanks to their meeting with one of the most eminent and authoritative figures in international theatre: Carlo Cecchi, who directed the play. Since then, in these twenty years, the experimentation of Scimone-Sframeli has never stopped, and the company has woven collaborations with some of the most important directors, actors and set designers on the Italian theatre scene. After Carlo Cecchi, we could mention Valerio Binasco and Gianfelice Imparato; among the set designers, artists such as Titina Maselli or Sergio Tramonti, Barbara Bessi and, most recently, Lino Fiorito.

Over the years, the Company’s repertoire of contemporary dramaturgy has become a reference even abroad. The plays by Scimone-Sframeli have been performed in England, France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Canada, Argentina, Portugal, the Netherlands, Croatia, Greece, Sweden and in the most prestigious European festivals, including the Festival d’Automne à Paris, the Kunsten Festival des Arts in Brussels, the Festival de Otoño in Madrid, the International Festival of Rotterdam, the Festival de Almada – Portugal, the Festival Inernacional de Teatro Mercosur Cordoba, Zagreb Festival.

Their original texts are translated into French, English, German, Greek, Spanish, Portuguese, Norwegian, Croatian, Slovenian and Danish and have been staged in France, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Scotland, Greece, Croatia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Brazil, Chile and Venezuela. They have been published in Italy by Ubulibri, in France by Arche translated by Jean Paul Manganaro and Valeria Tasca, in Spain by Teatro del Astillero with translations by Carla Matteini, in Portugal by Artistas Unidos.

Scimone and Sframeli directed and starred in the film Due amici (based on the play Nunzio), winner of the Golden Lion for a Debut Film at the 2002 Venice Film Festival.
