CHOREOGRAPHY & PERFORMANCE

Michele Di Stefano (Milan, 1963) deals with choreography and performance with the MK group, which he founded in Rome in 1999 as an irregular body research project. Central figure of Italian dance, he is an explorer of choreographic systems and dynamic fields that constantly redefine the relationship between individual project and the general system of movement. MK has presented its works in the most important festivals of the contemporary scene in Italy and abroad.

Di Stefano and MK are interested in building prototypes of extemporaneous habitats, investigating unusual formats in hybrid projects such as Instruction Series, Wasted and Accademie Eventuali; and Istituto di Alti Studi Coreografici, Piscina, Clima, Reform club, Oceano Indiano, Radio India, Piattaforma della Danza Balinese. Besides shows and performances Michele Di Stefano gives lectures and workshops in dance schools and universities. He established the Tropici series at Angelo Mai in Rome; he is curator of BUFFALO at PalaExpo, MACRO Roma and Museo Nazionale Romano; co-curator of the Giacimenta section for Matera 2019; and consultant for the dance programming (GRANDI PIANURE) of the Teatro di Roma. He has received choreographic commissions from Aterballetto, Korean National Contemporary Dance Company, Nuovo Balletto di Toscana and Ballet de Lorraine.

MK is one of the five international ensembles to which the book Corpo Sottile, una sguardo sulla nuova coreografia europea (Ubulibri, Milan 2003), a text on new European choreography.

He has been awarded the Silver Lion for innovation in dance at the IX BiennaleDanza 2014 in Venice.
In 2019, Michele Di Stefano / MK won the Premio Ubu for Bermudas in the Bermudas_forever version.
