FIENO DI CHIO

DOCUMENTARY THEATRE MAKERS

Miriam Selima Fieno graduated in Archaeology from the University of Genoa in 2007. She attended the preparatory course at the Civica Scuola di Teatro “Paolo Grassi” in Milan, and in 2008 she was admitted to the Accademia D’Arte Drammatica “Nico Pepe” where she graduated as an actress in 2011.

Nicola Di Chio graduated in 2007 from the two-year course for actors at ITACA (International Theatre Academy Adriatic) after studying at L.A.M.D.A. in London. In 2010 he attended the preparatory course for actors at the Civica Accademia “Paolo Grassi” in Milan and in 2011 he graduated from the course for actors at the Civica Accademia d’Arte Drammatica “Nico Pepe”.

They are among the founders of the theatre collective “La Ballata dei Lenna”, with which they have been developing an eight-year research and production path since 2012, which has earned them important awards. Their shows include: La protesta una fiaba italiana (2012), Cantare all’amore (2013) and Human Animal (2017).

After the dissolution of the collective “La Ballata dei Lenna”, Miriam Selima Fieno and Nicola Di Chio began a new collaboration that sees them engaged in a path of artistic research, social investigation and production, which uses documentary theatre to deepen the contemporary political debate, addressing issues that embrace geopolitics, human rights, activism, international relations in the countries of North Africa and the Middle East. Their projects involve non-professional actors such as activists, children and refugees, and create works that combine not only different disciplines such as theatre, cinema and music, but also distant cultural and artistic identities.

In 2020 Miriam Selima Fieno participates in the Premio Scenario Infanzia and wins the mention for the project From Syria: is this a child? (which premiered at FIT 2022, winning the Young&Kids competiton) for which she writes the dramaturgy and directs together with Nicola Di Chio. Together they also developed the documentary theatre project Fuga dall’EgittoEscape from Egypt, born in collaboration with the RAI journalist Azzurra Meringolo Scarfoglio and the musician and activist Yasmine El Baramawy (present in the performance), in which they staged the true stories of some Egyptian exiles forced to leave the country after the 2013 coup d’état because of their ideas. With Fuga dall’Egitto Miriam Selima Fieno won the calls for proposals Bando IntercettAzioni 2020 and the Bando MOVIN’UP 2021.
