MACARENA RECUERDA SHEPHERD

RESEARCHER IN THE PERFORMING ARTS, PEDAGOGY AND ILLUSIONISM

Macarena Recuerda Shepherd is trained in performing arts, theatre and dance. Although she has a degree from the Institut del Teatre, what really interests her – she states – are participatory projects that aim to create new forms of encounter with art. Since 2012 her research revolves around the role of the spectator. She invents new spaces to play, create and think in company.

Her early works include the fictional documentaries Thatʼs the story of my life (2010) and Greenwich Art Show (2012). Her research revolved, as it does today, around the concept of fiction, but focusing specifically on the construction of identities.

Her most recent works for the stage, play on the boundary between reality and representation to show the essence of theatre, the complex perception of dual realities: the actor and the character, reality and fiction, the conventions of watching. Notably, they include The Watching Machine (2020) – a piece composed of small installations that play with light, shadows and reflections to experience what is illusion, what is representation and what is theatrical convention – and AY! ¡YA! (2018) a work on the body and the gaze through trompe l’oeil that is landing at FIT 2023.

The research of Macarena Recuerda Shepherd is actually divided into two lines of work, alongside the research on language on stage she also pursues an investigation into pedagogy, structures and spaces of participation.

Macarena Recuerda has carried out different projects in collaboration with the artists Sofía Asencio, Idurre Azkue, David Franch, Txalo Toloza and Vicente Arlandisco.
