KENJI SHINOHE

CHOREOGRAPHER & DANCER

Kenji Shinohe (1990) is a Japanese choreographer and dancer based in Wuppertal, Germany. Introduced to ballroom dance by his grandmother as a child, he went on to study dance philosophy and art history in Japan before earning a scholarship to Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen in 2015. Upon graduating in 2019, he danced with NEUER TANZ Düsseldorf and soon began working internationally as a freelance choreographer and performer.

He has received multiple awards for his solo choreography—from THE PEELS (Erfurt, 2016) to R (Budapest, 2019)—as well as several awards at TEATRI RIFLESSI in 2023. His work meditates on the interaction of bodily movement with musical forms and incorporates metafictional concepts to stretch the boundaries of dance. His pieces have been seen in over 55 cities across 15 countries. Recent works include K(-A-)O, Tree Tree, and Action Briquette, performed at venues and festivals across Europe. Kenji collaborates regularly with companies such as Tanztheater Erfurt, Kompanie merighi | mercy, Carla Jordão, and Dinamo Danza.
