The company Dimitri/Canessa was born in 2013 from the desire of Elisa Canessa and Federico Dimitri to make their work autonomous by embarking on their own theatrical research. At the same time, they both continue their work as performers for numerous Dance and Theatre companies. Dimitri/Canessa is appreciated for its research work, for its productions that are continually poised between dance, theatre and performance, characterised by a register that ranges from dramatic tones to the more blatantly comic and grotesque. All this supported by a strong shared sense of aesthetics.
The company’s performances are presented both in Italy and abroad and at some of the most important Contemporary Theatre festivals. Main productions include: Bruno (2013) a play based on the works of Bruno Schultz, winner of the FRINGE/L’AltroFestival competition at FIT 2013 and nominated by MilanoTeatri as one of the best shows presented in Milan for the 2017/18 season; Hallo! I’m Jacket! il gioco del nulla (2016), a play that has received numerous awards, In-Box finalist, Premio Nazionale per il Teatro Contemporaneo 2017 and winner of the call Bando l’Italia dei Visionari for Kilowatt Festival 2017; Currently, the company is touring its latest production, GEPPETTO 201, a play based on the beautiful novel by Fabio Stassi Mastro Geppetto and produced in collaboration with Theaterwerkstatt Glai 5 (CH), Pilar Ternera/Nuovo Teatro delle Commedie and Progetto Goldstein.
The company is also active in theatre for children, collaborating for years with choreographer Giorgio Rossi/Sosta Palmizi and with whom it has created the shows Col Naso All’Insù and Esercizi di Fantastica (at FIT 2020). In addition to its production activity, the company is also committed to education and holds theatre and movement workshops in Italy and Switzerland. Elisa Canessa and Federico Dimitri are external lecturers of the MASTER of the University Teatro Dimitri (Switzerland), and have been collaborating for years with the Atelierschule (Zurich) and with the Raphaelschule (school of High Pedagogy, Zurich), where they carry out a social theatre project with 40 disabled young people.
Since January 2018, in Livorno, the company has set up Wintergarten – Atelier di Teatro Permanente, where they organise theatre classes and intensive workshops with some of the most significant names on the Italian contemporary theatre scene.
