In his performance, Cuckoo, the young South Korean artist Jaha Koo gives a touching reading on the tragedy of a lonely life in a completely technologised society.

A journey through the last twenty years of Korean history told by a group of rice cookers.
One day, when his electric rice cooker informed him that his meal was ready, Jaha Koo felt a deep sense of isolation. “Golibmuwon” (고립 무원) is an untranslatable Korean word which expresses the feeling of helpless isolation that characterises the lives of many young people in Korea today. Twenty years ago, a severe economic crisis (comparable to that of 2008 in Europe and the United States) hit South Korea. South Korea. This crisis had a huge impact on the younger generation to which Jaha belongs. He witnessed the endemic problems period, including youth unemployment and socio-economic inequality. and socio-economic inequality. Rising suicide rates, isolation, acute social withdrawal and a fixation on personal appearance are just some of the symptoms.
Through bittersweet and humorous dialogues, Jaha and his clever cooks take us on a journey through the last two decades of Korean history, combining personal experiences with political events and reflections on happiness, crises, and the economy. and reflections on happiness, economic crises and death. “Jaha Koo has created a work that captures his native culture in an artful way – the work is inherently Korean – but also has a modern European style and sensibility.
A week later, I’m still obsessed with the sounds and images of the show. Food for thought indeed’ (Totaltheatre.org.uk).
