SCANNASURICE

TEATRO ELICANTROPO (IT)

Scannasurice can be defined, without fear of contradiction, as a small classic of contemporary Neapolitan theatre. Three great personalities of the Italian theatre are responsible for the text, direction and interpretation: Enzo Moscato, a cult author of contemporary Neapolitan theatre, Carlo Cerciello, an award-winning director, and Imma Villa, an extraordinary actress who is unsurpassed in her performance. Scannasurice is a sort of descent to the “underworld” of a character with an androgynous identity, in the Neapolitan hypogeum where he lives, inside a hovel, among the most arcane elements of Neapolitan life, in the company of rats. The character lives, “beats”. He is originally a “femminiello” of the Quartieri Spagnoli in Naples, but Enzo Moscato’s femminielli are creatures without identity, almost mythological. Beyond sexual identity, they are almost magical. This is why the actress who plays them enhances the character’s ambiguity and excess. Once she has stripped away her flashy identity, she will wear the solitude and dilapidation of the hovel where she lives. She will be a blind Cassandra, an angel cast out of Paradise, a sorceress, a grotesque and desperate icon, but always poetic.
