TOWARDS DOCUMENTARY CHOREOGRAPHY
SYNOPSIS
For about a century, documentary theatre has reconstructed factual information to analyse specific events or phenomena. Visual artists and filmmakers have joined this trend, demonstrating how factual information can be altered and questioned. The field of choreography, driven by critical experimentations, remains largely uncharted in adopting factual information into its corpus.
Choreographers often include documentary elements as sources of inspiration in their artistic process, yet little of these elements remain in the final stage work.
However, the intersection between embodied and documentary practices opens possibilities to articulate new modes of engagement and intervention in social and political realities.
In his artistic practice, choreographer Arkadi Zaides investigates the possibilities of choreography to relate to today’s societal urgencies through the use of documentary materials.
In this workshop, Zaides will share his artistic work and its challenges, as well as question the participants’ possible modes of engaging with their respective realities. Participants, makers within the field of theater, performance, and choreography, are requested to arrive at the workshop with clear documentary materials with which they would like to engage through their artistic practice.
