ATTEMPT ON DYING
BORIS NIKITIN (CH)
For more than ten years, director and author Boris Nikitin has been investigating in his plays how we create reality and identity by representing them. His works tread the fine line between documentary and illusion, between facts and their staging. True biographies of the performers always play a special and central role. Works such as Imitation of Life or Hamlet are at the same time portraits of the performers on stage, in the course of an evening in front of an audience. In Attempt on dying Nikitin reverses the starting point: for the first time he ‘negotiates’ his biography. The focus is on his father’s illness with ALS and his choice to ‘divorce’ himself from life through assisted suicide. Nikitin puts together his father’s difficult choice with the story of his coming out as a gay man 20 years ago and creates a play about being public. Attempt on dying is a play about looking at others, overcoming the limits of shame and the utopia that vulnerability is not a lack of being human, but rather a revolutionary ability.
