Carmelo Rifici returns to explore two texts by Čechov that marked the founding stages of his career as a director: Tre sorelle (Three Sisters) and Il gabbiano (The Seagull). The latter has been rewritten by actress and playwright Livia Rossi, who reinterprets it in light of recent history, placing it in dialogue with the writings of Anna Politkovskaya and Svetlana Alexievich, both deeply involved in the narrative of war, and with Evgenij Onegin by Pushkin, a seminal work of Russian literature.
«This diptych opens a new phase of work in the field of pedagogy in theatre – explains Rifici. It is intended as an opening towards a different way of imagining paths with young performers that does not involve the finished form of a conventional theatre play. What does it mean for young people today to work on Čechov ‘s opus while maintaining a lively dialogue with literature? Can we ask Čechov to address the issue of Russia, of Europe today? We were educated on the great Russian literature, whose major authors have always been fertile ground in theater schools. What has changed today in light of the terrible consequences of a war between East and West?»
