The path to the performance
The idea of Some things to put in order was born in 2019 when the artist Rubidori Manshaft, who has been working on memory and memories for some time (see previous works on the theme of memory, with the cycle of five chapters Souvenir di Ricordi di.. .2015/2019) begins to question himself, starting from the relationship with his father, on the topic of lack (Handle with care 2017).
She was called by the FIT of Lugano (the first theatrical production of the festival) to work on the artistic part of the two-year RestezFIT! project, dedicated to elderly people.
RestezFIT! it included a socio-cultural part with participatory activities (an intergenerational tandem between young and old during the festival) and a research part led by an artist starting from her presence in elderly homes.
In March 2020 the project was suspended. Covid hits our society like a tsunami. Elderly homes are the first trench.
The original idea of Some things to put in order (on the theme of memories, memory) is overtaken by events.
Rubidori Manshaft resumes visits to elderly homes in March 2022 and, together with them, begins to work on the concept of time, care, fear, doing and what has been done.
Rubidori Manshaft and Katia Gandolfi (project assistant) held approximately thirty work meetings in the elderly homes of Morbio Inferiore, Fondazione Parco San Rocco and Lugano, POLIS LIS Center (Lugano Social Institutes).
In collaboration with some specialists and workers from the elderly homes, they met the guests both individually and in small groups. Stories were collected through video and audio interviews about their lives, their fears, their desires. From these reflections an original text was born inspired by these meetings and by some thinkers: Sophocles, Giordano Bruno, Salvatore Settis, Roland Barthes, Jean Améry, Michel Houellebecq, Giovanni Gurisatti, Martin Heidegger, Arthur Schopenhauer.
And did you get what you wanted from this life, despite everything? Yes. And what was it you wanted? Being able to say I am loved, feeling loved on earth. (Raymond Carver)
After a long period of work in nursing homes for elderly people, Rubidori Manshaft recalls his memories in this long “field” journey.
Linking himself to his past works, through narratives he further develops his artistic research on the passage of memory, on lack and on loneliness.
He starts from there to question himself about the body, about its political meaning. On care.
About time. About fear. On doing. On the loss of self, strength, role and sometimes even memory. Some things to put in order is the story of a woman just beyond the threshold of sixty, who begins to ask herself questions about the path of life, an echo of us all (and everyone).
We recognize ourselves in her words, in her thoughts which are perhaps also ours, we are taken aback by her surprising ability to mix them up, use them, appropriate them, forget them, invent them to replace what is wrong in the mind. Thoughts which, like real events, become co-protagonists of this story about living, about dreams and disillusions, about memories and regrets.
In this sublime reversal of reality we will be forcefully brought into a new time that perhaps will belong to us. An interior and real journey towards something, a montage of events, poignant, ironic, in the game that life plays in the attempt to redesign a human dimension that is perhaps lost today.
