Matthew Lenton, a leading director of the new British generation, founded Vanishing Point in 1999, a theatre company based in Glasgow. Active in both theatre, film and television, he works regularly with the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama. He has directed almost all of the company’s productions and his work has been presented in over 25 countries worldwide.
In 2010, Matthew Lenton became the first British director of the Ecole des Maîtres, a prestigious theatre master class led by leading figures from the European arts scene. In demand by many international theatres, with whom he has co-produced the company’s work, at home he is a promoter of Scottish independence because he believes in the cultural diversity of this part of the country and freedom from tradition.
Vanishing Point’s distinctive feature is to subvert reality and make the ordinary extraordinary. Their aim, they explain, is «to create theatre that is beautiful, accessible and original, […] genre-defying theatre for venues of varying scales, from international stages to local village halls.»
Lenton is the recipient of several awards including CATS (Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland) Best Director, Total Theatre Award, Scotsman Fringe First Awards.
