ANESTIS AZAS

Anestis Azas was born in Thessaloniki. He studied at the School of Drama of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin. As an assistant director, he cooperated with Dimiter Gotscheff and Rimini Protokoll. Since 2008 he works as a free-lance stage director mostly in Greece and Germany. He has also collaborated with the Onassis Cultural Centre and the National Theatre of Greece, Ballhaus Naunynstrasse and Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin, Schauspielhaus Zürich, Theater & Orchester Heidelberg, Theaterhaus Jena, Kammerspiele München. His work includes classical texts (Aeschylus, Heiner Müller, Koltès), texts by contemporary authors (Dmitrij Gawrisch, Daniela Janjic, Manolis Tsipos).

In cooperation with Prodromos Tsinikoris, he co-authored and co-directed documentary theatre projects such as: A journey by train (2011) a documentary play about the reduction and privatisation of the greek railways, Telemachus- Should I stay or should I go? (2013) an on stage confrontation of two generations of greek immigrants in Germany, Clean City (2016) a critical portrait of Greece by the perspective of immigrant cleaning ladies in Athens.

In cooperation with Martha Bouziouri, he wrote and directed a research- play about the refugee drownings in the Aegean Sea and the responsibility of greek Coast Guard, Case Pharmakonisi or The right of Water (2015).
