The far-right party Golden Dawn wants to cleanse, to “purify” Greece of migrants and refugees. These expressions have taken on a new dimension with the crisis in Greece, which has resulted in strong pressure against the immigrant community.
Greek filmmakers Anestis Azas and Prodromos Tsinikoris reciprocate this rhetoric with the question, “Who does the cleaning in this country?” Their docu-theater gives voice to five women of different ages. Cleaners from various generations of migrants tell in Clean City about a country where social contradictions collide daily and what solidarity is in times of crisis.
They are migrants from South Africa, Bulgaria, Russia, the Philippines and Albania who arrived in Greece to try their luck as cleaners. With humor and nerve they describe what it means to clean up Greece.
“Tsinikoris and Azas collect with dedication, over time, the life stories of five women, and compress everything into a great show, presenting a text about globalization, the concept of home, desire and family, the disappearance of the middle class that still nurtures so many dreams in Europe.” (Süddeutsche Zeitung). Clean City is an example of political theater that is widely believed to be dead.
