He is known for his performances addressing the dilemma of our society in a critical and playful way.

This new work explores the stories of two Japanese women with the aim of shedding light on individual stories during the turbulent events of the first half of the 20th century. Mitsouko & Mitsuko begins with the anecdotes of Mitsouko Yorisaka, a character in a French Orientalist novel set in Nagasaki during the Russo-Japanese War. Another woman gets introduced then, known as Mitsuko Coudenhove-Kalergi, who moved to Vienna during the period of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Both women embody the ambivalence between Japonism and the Yellow Peril in the West. The story traces the antithetical struggle between idealization and reality in the midst of Japan’s rapid modernization. Matsune finds surprising connections between historical events and the imaginary worlds depicted in the novels, films, and plays of that era. Through his very personal and unique approach, Michikazu Matsune reflects on some of the difficulties of the history in a global context and questions the message these stories carry for us in the present.

SAT 02.10.2021 | 20.30
PALCO TEATRO LAC – LUGANO

21.45 After-show meeting with the audience,
moderator Simon Valdwogel

MITSOUKO & MITSUKO MICHIKAZU MATSUNE (JP/AT) Michikazu Matsune, born in Kobe, Japan, has lived in Vienna for over two decades.
