He studied at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, specialising in visual communication. He graduated from DasArts in Amsterdam, an artistic research laboratory for new forms of theatre and performing arts, in 2013. He is a founding member of the electro-pop band Pentatones.<\/p>\n<p>He works as a performer, musician and visual artist, and develops works at the intersection of theatre, music and media, characterised by a political dimension and a documentary approach. He is the artistic director of Studio Julian Hetzel, an organisation based in Utrecht that creates and produces his artistic work. Hetzel&#8217;s creations are produced internationally. His work has been presented in more than 20 countries around the world.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, Hetzel received the <strong>VSCD-Mimeprijs<\/strong> for <em>The Automated Sniper<\/em> (by Frascati Productions and Ism &amp; Heit). <br \/>\n<em>All Inclusive<\/em> (2018, co-produced with CAMPO) was included in the official selection of the Dutch Theatre Festival 2019 and<em> Mount Averag<\/em>e (2020, co-produced by CAMPO) was included in the official selection of the Dutch Theatre Festival 2021.<\/p>\n<p>These last two shows address issues such as remote warfare, the economics of empathy, the instrumentalisation of art and the representation of suffering. His performances have been presented at numerous international festivals, including Steirischer Herbst, Festival d&#8217;Avignon, Theater der Welt, Kunstenfestivaldesarts and Impulstanz.<\/p>\n<p><em>Self<\/em> \u00a0by Julian Hetzel was the Netherlands&#8217; national contribution to the Prague Quadrennial 2019. <br \/>\nIn August 2019, Hetzel presented three works at the Venice Theatre Biennale. Julian Hetzel is an associate artist at the Kunstencentrum CAMPO in Ghent (BE). Since 2021, Studio Julian Hetzel has received structural funding from the Fonds Podiumkunsten (FPK) and the City of Utrecht.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, Hetzel founded IS THIS A ROOM, an artistic production platform that works internationally. His work is distinguished by a combination of conceptual precision and strong emotional impact.<\/p>\n<p>Studio Julian Hetzel creates non-disciplinary artistic projects that combine contemporary theatre, performance and visual arts. The works have a political dimension and a documentary approach. Studio Julian Hetzel creatively experiments with manifestations of neoliberalism, highlighting the dilemmas between ethical principles and economic interests.
